PROFILE OF FIRM PRICIPAL

LES SOLIN, FAICP, founder and President of SAI, is frequently called upon to lecture at state and national professional conferences on Comprehensive Planning and Land Development Regulations. He served as an instructor for the Florida Chamber's Growth Management short course in Comprehensive Planning, Evaluation and Appraisal Reports, Plan Implementation and Legislative Updates.   Mr. Solin has been qualified and frequently serves as an expert witness in matters surrounding land use and comprehensive planning. He has testified before State Hearing Examiners; Eighteenth and Nineteenth Judicial Circuit Courts; and US Court, Middle District of Florida. 

From 1988 to 1996, LES SOLIN served as one of seven elected commissioners on the governing board of the AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF CERTIFIED PLANNERS (AICP) and served as Vice President of AICP from 1992 to 1996.  AICP is the professional development organization that certifies planners; participates in the accreditation of collegiate planning programs; promotes professional development; and enforces ethics in the profession. Principal author of AICP’s Professional Practice Manual (American Planning Association Press, 1995), Mr. Solin is the past chair of the AICP Professional Practice Committee and AICP Ethics Committee. In 1999, Mr. Solin was elected to the inaugural class of the Fellows of AICP. 

Les Solin’s professional planning career covers over 40 years and includes 15 years in the public sector and over 25 years as a principal of Solin and Associates, Inc. Before entering private practice, Solin served with local, metropolitan, county, and regional planning agencies in Tennessee and Florida. As a consultant, Solin works with public agencies in every region of Florida and also within other areas of the southeast.

A substantial portion of Solin's consulting practice is directed at assisting local governments. However, his in-depth planning experience has attracted the interest of citizen non-profit organizations as well as the development community. Solin is frequently retained to provide expert opinions regarding land use and development issues involving compatibility, consistency, and compliance. He is a member of the Congress of New Urbanism and is working on certification in Form-Based Codes.

Mr Solin holds a master’s degree in city planning from the Georgia Institute of Technology, a master's in business administration from Florida Institute of Technology, and a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
